Lois Elizabeth Dant
What comes to mind when you think about yourself and others within society? The thoughts of the human mind and how they are often difficult to express, encourages me to produce artwork that bridges the gap between emotional thoughts and visual reality. Throughout my artwork I focus on relating to the viewer, telling a story that is important and immerses them in thoughts about mental health issues, social media influences and social taboos. I encourage you to think about the deeper meaning behind the often unique and unconventional presentation of my work. My artwork mainly consists of performance to camera, installations, and performance art. This will sometimes include participation with the piece such as wearing masks, sitting within an immersive installation or others painting onto my body.
Technology including video, sound, projection, and lighting are a large part of my practice. I find that by using these technologies they become more relatable to the viewer, as they are familiar in day to day life. Technology and performance allow me to work beyond the restrictions of the canvas, as I am able to express emotions and challenge preconceptions through mannerisms, movements, props, and editing.
